These are aerial photos taken with a HD Wingcam on a SS UAV. The photos show the presence of algal blooms along the eastern shores of Taal Lake, esp Mataas na Kahoy-Balete area. Taken on 5 April 2012.
Algal blooms occur when there is an over abundance of nutrients in the water. Agricultural runoffs and animal manure dumping are suspect causes in this case.
The "Disappearing River" shows a river being overtaken by massive bloom.

We congratulate the delegates and winners of the 9th PNCO.
The PNCO is an annual chemistry coompetition featuring the best junior high school student in the country. It is organized by the Kapisanang Kimika ng Pilipinas (Chemical Society of the Phils, Inc.).
Our thanks to the BSCPI volunteers who made sure this year's PNCO was a success.
Pansipit River Expedition of 31 March 2010. My wife and I motored from Bgy. Balas (northern shore of Lake Taal) to Pansipit River and out to Balayan Bay. The journey covered 30 kms of fantastic views of Taal volcano, Mt. Makulot, Pansipit river and the Balayan Bay coastline. Notable are the hundreds of birds in and around the fishpens.
These photos were take as we sailed across Taal lake along the western coastline.
Celebrating Bahal and Bahalina, fermented coconut "tuba" , the staple alcoholic drink of the Warays.
The event highlight was the attempt to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records "most number of wine tasters..." category. The current record of 5,095 wine tasters doing the "tagay" simultaneously is being held by Spain!
Waray conquistadores , this time, over Mother Spain.
I was happy to be part of the 9,330 wine tasters who gathered last sunday at the MacArthur Landing Site in Palo, Leyte where the "Tagay" was held.
We salute the An Waray Party List headed by Cong. Bem Noel for putting this even together. Proceeds from the event will benefit the flood victims of Luzon.
I also thank the Noel family for their hospitality! Mommy Lisa, Ate Marissa, Kuya Rory, Tito Jun, Ate Binky.....
I also enjoyed the chance to be an "impromptu wine taster/ judge" during the Best Bahal/Bahalina competition and to have worked side by side with Don Filemon Juntereal. Fil (a Filipino) is an internationally recognized wine expert.
The featured box boat was designed and built by the Philippine Home Boatbuilders Yacht Club. The video was taken during the "lab test" conducted at the DLSU Swimming Pool , Oct 14, 2009

I visited Provident Village in Marikina as soon as it was accessible after being hit by typhoon Ondoy. I saw with my eyes the extent of devastation as shown in some of the photos I took.
I was told by residents how fast the water (and mud) rose to about five meters....happening in less than one hour...
Our friend and senior club member escaped the raging mudwater by seeking refuge on the rooftop of a neighbor/friend . I received his SOS meesage in my cellphone on Sept 26 but I could not do anything....the area was just not accessible...unless you have a chopper.
I've always though of Ed as a "MacGyver" guy and so I was not too worried.
The Garcia residence was completely under water.
The family is now in the process of reclaiming their home. I joined them yesterday in shoveling mud and debris from the property and sorting through bits and pieces in the mud for valuable items.
I must say that I truly admire the family's disposition and manner of facing such misfortune. There was no sad face in the Garcia residence yesterday....just busy bees ... laughing it out ! The cleanup was a family project and I was glad to be part of it even for a day.
Very Filipino indeed....resilient, unbreakable spirits.
In preparation for the canoeing/kayaking programs of the BSCPI, we started building 12-foot canoes . For the first fleet, we chose the Bateau canoe using the free building plans from www.bateau.com.
The building takes place in our yard in Paranaque.
Many thanks to Pinoypiper (Roy) for the clamps. They make the work a lot easier!
Some build photos are posted below.
* My friend Rolly (Pinoypiper) is the only professional bagpiper in the Philippines. While not playing his bagpipe for weddings, funerals and other solemn occasions Roy builds boats. www.pinoypiper.com
We also acknowledge the help of Engr.Louis Casambre who was my mentor in boatbuilding (he preferred to be called a senior apprentice rather than mentor :) . We are currently finishing my Corsair 13 (http://www.bateau.com/proddetail.php?prod=CR13) in his yard in Cainta, Rizal which we hope to be sailing on during the Round The Volcano (Taal) Regatta in November 2009.
